Skardu Log Day #21 (12th December 2004):
LAND AHOY. At 1pm local time, we spied the faint outline of St.Lucia 30 miles distant. Our
offshore routine was quickly broken; and after almost 5 days of not touching our two headsails,
we finally had to prepare to make landfall. We had been hoping to arrive a little before sunset, but
as the wind died down it was clear that we would be arriving in the dark. We had just enough
time for a final shower, a quick tidy-up on board before we had to drop our second headsail and
call in to the ARC controller to warn them of our arrival. Before we knew it we were rounding
Pigeon Point for the finish line, and for the first time in 3 weeks were heading upwind! Our sails
we hard in and we were heeling over nicely as the boat photographer drove alongside us taking
our finish line photos. After 20 days, 9hours, 20 mins and 35 seconds we crossed the finish
line. The celebrations started as we were cheered on by the crowds in the restaurants and bars
lining the canal entrance to the marina, and when we docked we were greeted by Quintin’s and
Martin’s families, and an ARC welcoming committee which included steel drums and rum
punches all around. We added to the celebrations with a few small bottles of champagne, and
then on flying form headed straight out to the Caribbean party.
